The 2020 Shared Scholar is Dr. Mary Evelyn Tucker, senior lecturer and research scholar at Yale University's Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and its Divinity School.

Hosted by the Sanibel-Captiva Interfaith Shared Scholar Committee, the Shared Scholar Lecture will be held on Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. at the Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ. Tucker will focus on the interface between environmental concerns and spirituality. Following the lecture, the Shared Scholar Seminar will be held on Jan. 27 from 9 a.m. 1 p.m. at the church with Tucker.

In preparation for her visit, the Rev. Dr. John H. Danner will present a two-part study titled "Journey of the Universe: An Introduction to Mary Evelyn Tucker," on Dec. 4 and 11 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the church. Utilizing a book she co-wrote with Brian Swimmer, "Journey of the Universe," and a film by the same title, the class will offer a look at Tucker's life and work. Copies of the book will be available.

The events are free and open to the public; a freewill offering will be accepted at the Jan. 26 one.

Tucker teaches in a joint master's program in religion and ecology and directs the Forum on Religion and Ecology at Yale with her husband, John Grim. Her special area of study is Asian religions. Tucker received her doctorate from Columbia University in Japanese Confucianism. Since 1997 she has been a research associate at the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard.

Her concern for the growing environmental crisis, especially in Asia, led her to organize with Grim a series of conferences on world religions and ecology at the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard. After the series, she and Grim founded the Forum on Religion and Ecology at a culminating conference at the United Nations in 1998. They now direct the Forum at Yale, where they also teach.

The Shared Scholar programs are an interfaith offering sponsored by the Captiva Chapel by the Sea, Bat Yam - Temple of the Islands, Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, Christian Science Church of Sanibel and SCUCC, as well as the Leo Rosner Foundation.
