The Captiva Civic Association will kick off its 2019-2020 art exhibition season on Dec. 5 with an opening reception at 5 p.m. at the Captiva Civic Center. The exhibit, titled "Destination Captiva," is being sponsored by the Sanibel-Captiva Art League and CCA.

Entries for the exhibit will be accepted on Nov. 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the center.

Artists with freshly rendered artwork depicting uniquely identifiable people, places and things on and en route to Captiva - day or night - are invited to submit their work. Open to all artists, one does not need to be a SCAL or CCA member to participate. Paintings (oil, watercolor, acrylic), mixed media, pastels, drawings and fiber art will be accepted; prints and photographs will not be accepted.

Last year, over 60 artists entered 80 pieces for the show.

On Nov. 26 at 2 p.m., juror Dannica Walker will announce the awards for first, second and third place, along with the "Captiva Award." It will be followed by a talk on works by Walker and the exhibit.

The opening reception will coincide with the CCA Holiday Social and feature refreshments, hors d'oeuvres and live music. About 200 people attended the season-opening event last season.

"Destination Captiva" is the first of four shows that the CCA will host. Opening on Jan. 16, the second exhibition will feature the works of two artists - Joan Klutch and Sissi Janku. On Feb. 13, the SCAL and CCA will sponsor an artists invitation exhibition with 10 artists. On March 19, visual artists once in residence at the Rauschenberg Residency will provide a glimpse into what can happen during the five weeks on Captiva.

The first exhibit will be open for viewing Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 2 p.m. through Jan. 2 or by appointment. On Dec. 29, it will be on display at the Captiva Chapel by the Sea from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All the artwork is available for sale.
