August 6, 2019
By JOE PACHECO , Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

(Editor's note: First poem written after quintuple by-pass heart surgery.)

I shut my eyes -

Opened them to see -

Mortality had toppled

down on me -

Boulder by boulder

Remembrance and ruin -

In piles of rubble

About my body strewn -

Hoses and tubes

In and out of me

Devices and monitors

My new reality -

Anesthesia fog

And waking sleep -

World dripping dread

Of pulse and beep -

But treasured still -

The salvaged find

Of shards of lifetime

Left behind

Raised up from ashes

A tower apart -

A shining city

For the mended heart -
