F.I.S.H. of San-Cap offers thank you to seasonal volunteers

Help needed during off-season months too

It is once again that time of year when F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva says farewell to its seasonal volunteers.

"We cannot thank you enough for sharing your time with us while you were here and hope you know the positive impact you made on the lives of so many of our island neighbors," Lyn Kern, the office and volunteer manager, said. "We could not, and cannot, complete the significant work we do without your energy, enthusiasm and compassion."

"Our volunteers are the lifeblood of F.I.S.H. During the summer, we continue to provide our services with a skeleton crew of available volunteers, and it ain't easy - yet we do it," she added. "We already can't wait for your return."

F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva thanked this past season's volunteers and added that it is looking for volunteers to help out during the off-season months.

At 200-plus strong, F.I.S.H. volunteers make it all happen. They are drivers both on and off island. Volunteers pick up food from the Harry Chapin Food Bank, Midwest Food Bank, Bailey's General Store, Jerry's Foods, Publix, Island Pharmacy, CVS and the Farmer's Market.

Through midday traffic, they deliver meals to folks from Captiva to the East End and arrange for equipment pickups seven days a week. Volunteers answer phones, stock shelves, assemble backpacks, wrap presents and so much more. They are a shoulder to lean on and an ear to lend; they are a smiling face that becomes a friend.

Far too many are seasonal, leaving F.I.S.H. with a small supply of able bodies year-round.

"May through October are tough for us since many have gone home or are traveling," Kern said. "We lose 85 percent of our volunteer base during this time, yet the requests continue."

"We could really use your help, even if you have just an hour or so a week. You will be trained in your area(s) of interest and placed with an experienced and seasoned volunteer or staff member to help you until you feel comfortable," she added. "With your help, F.I.S.H. can continue our mission to lend a helping hand to those that live, work or visit Sanibel and Captiva Islands."
