BIG ARTS to present riveting one-woman show

Local actress Katie Pankow returns to the BIG ARTS Herb Strauss Theater in "Grounded," a solo play by award-winning playwright George Brant.

The limited run features only 10 performances opening on April 11 and running through April 21.

The heroin of "Grounded" feels most alive when she is up in the air. A fighter pilot in the Air Force, she loves everything about her job - the suit, the speed, the danger, the respect - but most of all the "blue," as she calls the wide expanses of sky through which she steers her plane, searching out the bad guys in sorties over Iraq.

In the play's first half, Pankow's character describes the rush she gets in flight, and the easy camaraderie she shares with fellow (and mostly male) pilots. She's a woman who's as happy in her skin as she in her flight suit. So, she's taken by surprise when she finds herself falling for a man - one that is not intimidated by her 'tough-guy' job - and unexpectedly becomes pregnant.

Suddenly, her life changes as she is forced to be grounded and reassigned to fly drones in a windowless trailer in the Las Vegas desert. The boundaries between the desert in which she lives and the one she patrols half a world away begin to blur as pressure to track a high-profile target mounts.

There will be an opening reception on April 11 at 6:30 p.m.
