Saving lives on the bike path

March 28, 2018

To the editor:

The new yellow lines down the middle of the bike path spell safety. Thanks, city, for getting that done because there are more riders on the path right now and that yellow line is needed. Keeping bikers in line - if you'll pardon the pun - can save lives.

But, there is another major life-saving problem of too many people without helmets. I think most of the tourists who rent bikes don't know that there is no extra charge for helmets. Us locals just can't keep pretending that they won't be in a bike accident and hit that hard tarmac with their heads.

I urge them to use their heads and always wear a helmet. I have three on the back of my bike I give away free. And Noah's Ark frequently has them for $2.

One last thing. I urge everyone to "announce" when they are passing. It is so important. A biker who doesn't hear you coming up can make an awkward move to the left and bring you both down to disaster.
