Nationally touring comedians will make a stop at Sundial Beach Resort & Spa twice a week through April to bring another form of entertainment to the island.
The first performance of the Gulf Coast Comedy Night will be held tonight featuring Kerry Pollock. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m.
"Comedy Night brings a fresh, lively entertainment experience to both our guests and the local community. Paired with dinner at Sea Breeze Cafe, or Shima Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar, it will make for a fun and relaxing evening out on the island," General Manager Phillip Starling said in a prepared statement.
Comedian Kerry Pollock will perform tonight at Sundial Beach Resort & Spa.
Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by visiting www.gulfcoastcomedy.com, or calling (239) 542-3869.
"The one thing I like best about Sundial . . . I recommend stopping at the pool bar, or get a bite to eat. Have a drink, catch a dinner and then the show and make a whole evening out of it," Pollock said. "I always liked the Sundial. A great location and food and great people."
Pollock stumbled into comedy by accident, making it his career more than 25 years ago. As a design engineer, he focused on machinery for a few years, before he started playing with magic again in his 20s.
"I was horsing around doing stuff when someone saw me from a night club and said I would like to hire you," Pollock said. "It took off from there."
What started off as a part-time gig, turned into working on cable television and in Las Vegas. The comedian's tag line is "funny, not filthy."
"I love what I do. I truly enjoy getting on stage and having fun. It's like making new friends every night," Pollock said.
The comedian owns Comedy Magic Cabaret on Hilton Head Island where he performs a two hour show, and brings in a guest act every four or five weeks when he travels. The cabaret opened four years ago, and this summer moved to a new location.
"It's a nice intimate cabaret with multi-levels," Pollock said, which sits up to 90 people. "It's more like a small Las Vegas show room."
With repeat business, he said it inspires him to come up with new material.
His performance, "a different kind of creative" includes standup comedy, as well as original magic and audience participation. Pollock said during his act he presents his inventions, which become funny props and "magical things happen" with the performance.
"I have a few different themes. I play to the crowd a lot and get them involved. I don't humiliate people," he said, adding that he enjoys chatting with the audience because he often times works their occupations into his act.
In addition to making audiences laugh, he also designs and builds magic and illusions. He has designed illusions for such names as David Copperfield, Penn & Teller, Lance Burton, David Blaine and Criss Angel. Pollock said often times he will build them something and use it in his act.
"I would like to say it was a grand plan, but that was accidental too," he said of his business Creative Entertainment Solutions.
John Biddle, owner of Gulf Coast Comedy, said he used to live on the island and thought the Comedy Night event would be perfect for Sanibel.
"They have to laugh at least twice because it adds ambiance to the room," he said of those who attend.
The Comedy Nights will continue every Tuesday and Wednesday in the Sanibel-Captiva Room at 7 p.m. Some of the acts include Emmy Award Winner and Grammy nominated Dennis Blair, Comedy Club Network's Mark Klein and Las Vegas regular Jimmy Carrol.
Biddle said he has been in the business for a long time, so many of the performers have been friends of his for more than 20 years.
