There will be a memorial service for Edward Berninger on Sunday, January 1st at 12:30 at the Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ.
Edward B. Berninger, of Stone Ridge NY, Short Hills, NJ and Sanibel, FL, died on April 29th in Fort Myers, FL. Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania on May 9, 1928, he attended MIT on an ROTC scholarship, graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1950. While at MIT, he was coxswain on the crew and a member of Phi Kappa Sigma. He served in the US Army from 1951 to 1953, in Texas and New Mexico. While stationed in San Antonio, he met his wife of 52 years, Carol Anne Ray of Waban, Massachusetts, who died in 2008.
After his Army service, he received his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1955. He started at Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati but worked most of his career in mainframe computer operations at Esso (later Exxon) in New York, Sweden, Florida and New Jersey. He volunteered at the Millburn, NJ Red Cross chapter and gave pro bono tax preparation help at community clinics. Through church, he tutored at-risk students from the Newark School System. He loved opera and sang baritone in the Sanibel Community Chorus as well as at the Community Congregational Church in Short Hills and the Summit Chorale in New Jersey. In retirement, he returned to his boyhood hobby of stamp-collecting and was engrossed by puzzles of all sorts.
He is survived by his sister, Mary B. Allan M.D. of Westtown, PA; two daughters, The Rev. Caroline Berninger of Stone Ridge NY and Nan Berninger of California; son-in-law Vahe Keukjian and grandchildren Emmanuel and Elizabeth Keukjian; several cousins, beloved nieces and a nephew.
Interment of his ashes was at the Community Congregational Church in Short Hills. Gifts in Ed's memory may be made to Rondout Valley United Methodist Church (P.O. Box 295, Stone Ridge, NY 12484) or Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ (2050 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel 33957).
